District 180 Key Beliefs

We believe that:

All children can learn.

All children are special.

The community, including parents, staff, and students, through support, guidance, and communication, is integral to the learning process in our schools.

Parents and staff have the responsibility of providing a variety of motivational approaches which challenge students and encourage them to be successful.

Public education must be funded with the expectation that it will deliver value in terms of a well educated child.

High expectations foster high achievement; excellence should be encouraged.

Equal access and opportunity ensure that all children may achieve their personal best.

An atmosphere of encouragement, in which all children are treated with respect, their opinions are valued, and kindness and support are modeled behaviors, inspires students to take pride in themselves and their school.

Discipline, as a positive, structured format for behavior, is necessary to accomplish the educational goals of our district.

Citizenship, critical thinking skills, communication skills, creativity, goal orientation, a healthful lifestyle, lifelong learning, problem solving skills, respect for the environment, responsibility, self confidence, and tolerance are the foundation of the schools' programs.

Daily physical exercise, extra-curricular activities, and sports are an important part of our children's education.

Schools must be flexible and innovative to prepare our students for the challenges of the twenty-first century.

Cultural diversity of the district and the uniqueness of the individual should be respected.

An excellent, motivated staff is the foundation of our success.

Staff training, development, and evaluation are critical for the achievement of our goals.

Good educational decision-making includes broad utilization of practical knowledge and appropriate reflection on research.

Board of Education Members
The seven members of the Board of Education serve four-year staggered terms. Candidates run for office in the April general election in odd numbered years. Members serve without pay and must be 18 years old, United States citizens, registered voters, and residents of Illinois and the school district for one year preceding the election.

What is the role of the Board of Education?
The Board of Education is composed of seven members elected by the community. School Board members serve a four-year term.
As public servants, board members spend many hours on school business. They are not paid for their time or services.

The Board of Education is responsible for

  • defining the school district philosophy for our comprehensive education program
  • establishing goals and objectives to achieve that philosophy
  • adopting policies for the daily operation of the District
  • evaluating the progress and effectiveness of District programs and policies
  • developing and presenting a budget consistent with educational needs and community resources
  • appointing a superintendent to manage the budget, supervise the staff and students, and make recommendations on operation of the school system.

How long do Board meetings last?
Board of Education meetings generally average two or three hours in length depending upon the issues being discussed and citizen comments that are shared.
What happens at a Board meeting?
Typical Agenda:
1.  Call Meeting to Order
2.  Consent Agenda

  • Approval of Minutes

How do I contact the Board of Education?
The Board of Education welcomes public comment. Any citizen wishing to address the Board may speak at the Board of Education meeting as part of "Public Participation/Hearing of Petitions."

Public Participation at Board meetings
Community members and district employees are invited to share their questions, comments or concerns with the school board.  When speaking, citizens will be asked to state their name and address for the record and limit their presentation to five minutes.  All comments are a matter of public record and as such will be documented and recorded.  Where possible, the board will answer factual questions immediately.  A written response may be provided when information is not available.  If a response would involve discussion of board policy or decisions which might be of interest to citizens not present at the meeting, the board may place the item on a future meeting agenda.

Additionally, board policy 2:230 permits the Board President to shorten a person’s opportunity to speak.  “The President may also deny the opportunity to speak to a person who has previously addressed the Board on the same subject within the last two months.” (2:230)
Larger groups sharing a concern as a group, are asked to please choose a spokesperson in the interests of time.

Many concerns are most efficiently handled through the District 180 Administration Office.  Call (630) 734-6600 between 7:40 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

How often are Board meetings held?
